From the Desk of Dr. Casey:
During Fresno State's Football matchup against 10th ranked Boise State, quarterback Ryan Colburn ran for it during a crucial 4th and 4 situation. There was no slide and the result was a helmet to helmet hit that was so crushing it drew gasps from the crowd.
In true fashion, the announcers called him a "tough guy" and the medical team that attended to him on the sidelines was seen smiling and laughing during, what I can only guess was their attempt to assess Colburn for a concussion. Within 2 plays, Colburn was back in the game.
The conversation isn't simple or easy, but the assessment and response to athletes in contact sports has to become more consistent and professional.
Here is the latest editorial from The New York Times to assist coaches with this daunting task.
